Beat the Baggie Bird Goalie!
On May 1st 2008, the whole of Holywell Primary School enthusiastically supported our sponsored Beat the Goalie event. Children from Nursery to Year 6 enjoyed a penalty shoot-out against Baggie Bird from West Bromwich Albion Football Club.
Loud cheers erupted from the school hall as the children tried to slip the ball into the net. We are hoping to raise lots of money from this sponsored event, which will be split between the West Bromwich Albion Community Programme and the school.
We celebrated World Book Day in style! !
Children and staff dressed as their favourite character from a book, and Holywell became storyland for the day. There were the good, the bad and the ugly, and everyone enjoyed the day.

at Holywell
On Friday 2nd November, Elvis flew in from Graceland to join the Holywell choir live on stage. He performed some of his greatest hits for fans young and not quite as young.
He was in Rubery for just one day to promote the Holywell Choir's forthcoming "Primrose Proms" performance at the Spadesbourne Suite in Bromsgrove. The choir will be singing a medley of Elvis songs and some of their favourite school songs, in aid of the Primrose Hospice. Sorry folks, this is already a sell-out gig!
Elvis appeared at Holywell by special arrangement with Rev. Nick Jones.

"Bookstart" Treasure Chest for Nursery children
Sharing books is fun and enjoyable for everyone. The children in Nursery have all received their very own Treasure Chest of books from "Bookstart". This is a national scheme that encourages families to enjoy sharing books. Parents were invited to come along and join in the celebration with stories and singing. The children were very excited and could not wait to open their treasure chests and share the contents. You can find out more about the Bookstart scheme at www.bookstart.co.uk.

Welcome to Stay and Play!
As part of the induction programme for children new to Nursery, we offer parents and carers the opportunity to come and join in a variety of exciting activities with their children. Parents and carers can meet and talk to the staff in a relaxed atmosphere.
Stay and Play helps us to develop relationships with families, enables continuity from home to Nursery for the children and helps to promote the value of play in children’s learning. Everyone has lots of fun and no one wants to go home!

This term in Science lessons, year 2 have been learning about Materials.
We have sorted materials into types; metal, glass, wood, plastic, fabric.
We have described their properties; hard, soft, heavy, light, smooth, rough.
We took rubbings of the different materials around the playground.
We tested materials to see if they could bend, stretch, squash or twist.

We predicted how bread might change when it is put in a toaster; what did it look like, feel, smell and taste like, before and after.
Ideas for things to do at home:
How many different materials can you find at home?
Help at home with the cooking. How do materials change when heat is applied?
Make cakes and jelly!
Look on the internet or go to the library. Where do metal, glass and plastic come from?

Annie the Housemaid
At the end of April 2008, year 3 travelled back in time to the Victorian Era. They were visited by Annie the Housemaid. She told them what it was like to be a servant in a large house. The children were lucky enough to try out the activities that a housemaid would have carried out in the 1880's.
They dressed up in Victorian clothes and got on with the chores: ironing, using butter paddles to roll butter into balls for the mistress, using the dolly to wash dirty clothes in the wash bowl, and brushing the carpets clean. Everyone worked hard and had a real insight into the life of a Victorian housemaid.
India

This term, year 3 are finding out about India – where India is in the world, and the way people live in the towns and the countryside. We are investigating food, clothes and art from India. During RE lessons, we have been sharing the story of Rama and Sita.
In art lessons, we have been looking at Mendhi patterns. We are very grateful to one of our mums, who came into school to paint Mendhi patterns onto our hands. You can find out more about Mendhi from www.mendhi.co.uk/4680.html
