Sports Day was a great success for Key Stage 2 this year. A special guest made a surprise appearance to encourage everyone to stay fit and healthy by keeping active and enjoying Sports Day.....
Hearty Beat from the British Heart Foundation was welcomed by an enormous cheer and eight children were lucky enough to take part in a relay with a replica of the Olympic Torch, which athletes used in 1948.
The fastest children from Elm, Oak, Ash and Beech took part in sprint races and relay races, before taking on the Round Robin challenge. Each class tried their best to score as many points as possible for their own house.
After all the competitions, the points were counted and the final scores were revealed. the Holywell Sports Day Champions this year are Beech! Congratulations!

On Tuesday 16th June, sixteen children from Year 4 took part in the Bromsgrove Schools Bellboating Regatta at Upton Warren Outdoor Education Centre. The children were selected by a random draw and were split into two groups of eight to compete as teams in the boat races. "Holywell A" were accompanied by Mr Davis and "Holywell B" by Mrs Cooper.
Holywell A in action
In addition to taking part in boat races, the children all had the opportunity to try the King Swing activity, and almost all of them did so. This activity involves the children working as a team to raise two of the children forty feet off the ground. Then a rope is released, and they swing back and forth...a real adrenalin thrill, which some enjoyed more than others!
On the King Swing
The regatta was well-organised and ran smoothly. It was well-supported by lots of local schools and many parents attended, enjoying a fantastic day in the sunshine. Thanks to the parents of Holywell children who came along to support us.
Holywell had some success in the races; both teams finished first and third in their respective heats, and went through to the finals. In the D Final, Holywell B finished second in a very close and competitive race. What a great effort! Holywell A managed to go one better in the C Final, winning their race by the narrowest of margins. Both teams supported each other fully and the behaviour of the children throughout the day was exceptional.
Final pre-race checks...
The regatta was a fantastic event and our thanks must be given to Stuart Evans, Dave and Andy Train, as well as Fladbury Paddlers volunteers and the staff of Upton Warren Outdoor Education Centre. They all played ... >> full

During the week of 8th - 12th June 2009, 6CP and 6AW visited Malvern Hills Outdoor Education Centre for two and a half days each. The centre offers the children the opportunity to be challenged physically, mentally and spiritually.
The children arrived and were immediately expected to take responsibility for themselves and to work as a team; the beds in their dorms had to be made up and ready for inspection. After a short introduction to the centre, a programme of activities began. These were:
- High Ropes

-
Orienteering
-
Kayaking
-
Hillwalking
-
Quarrying
-
The Quadpole
-
Rock Climbing
-
Zipwire.
Throughout the week, the children achieved lots of successes and every child attempted every challenge with determination and enthusiasm. Many overcame their fears on the high ropes, zipwire and the awesome quadpole.
As if climbing a wobbly wooden pole wasn't bad enough, having the courage to stand on a platform the size of a dinner plate with three other people and no room to breathe is a challenge for the bravest. Just ask Miss Penfold!
The children's behaviour was excellent throughout, keeping the dorms tidy and showing respect for the facilities and staff at the centre. The Malvern staff were very impressed with both groups and clearly enjoyed working with such attentive children.
Overall, this was a highly successful visit and everyone arrived home feeling exhausted, but on a high after a challenging couple of days.

| As part of their Design and Technology topic this term, Year 6
sampled a variety of different soups to decide on the textures and
flavours they enjoyed.
They then worked together to draw up a list of ingredients and
planned and wrote their own recipes for soup. The soups were a huge
success!

Preparing the ingredients was hard work......

So was the washing up afterwards.

It's official: Year 6 and Year 1 have become reading buddies!
This new initiative not only raises the profile of reading for pleasure, but also gives much-needed reading practice for Year 1 children. At the same time, Year 6 pupils have the opportunity to share their strategies for decoding words and making sense of text. It's certainly proving to be very successful with the children.
On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Year 1 and Year 6 classes join together to read. Every child from Year 1 has a Year 6 partner.
Sometimes Year 6 pupils can practise their reading aloud skills, by choosing a library book to read and talk about with their buddy. At other times, Year 1 children will read books from their book bags.
Fun for all and a real treat!
