Year 1 have been making jelly this week. As part of our Literacy work on Instructions, we have been thinking through the steps to make jelly. It was great fun, and the best part was eating it!

 Living Stable Visit

  posted on December 15, 2009 12:55 as Year 1

On Monday 7th December, Year 1 visited St. Chad's Church in Rubery to experience the Living Stable.

Shepherds at the stable

At the church, children were invited to join one of the wise men to follow a star to a special stable. At the stable, the children participated in a live retelling of the Christmas Story. They were invited to join in with songs, and they sang "Away In A Manger" beautifully. All of the children enjoyed the experience and wrote thank-you letters to Reverend James the following day.

 Reading Partnership

  posted on June 04, 2009 14:08 as Year 1

It's official: Year 6 and Year 1 have become reading buddies!

This new initiative not only raises the profile of reading for pleasure, but also gives much-needed reading practice for Year 1 children. At the same time, Year 6 pupils have the opportunity to share their strategies for decoding words and making sense of text. It's certainly proving to be very successful with the children.

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Year 1 and Year 6 classes join together to read. Every child from Year 1 has a Year 6 partner.

Sometimes Year 6 pupils can practise their reading aloud skills, by choosing a library book to read and talk about with their buddy. At other times, Year 1 children will read books from their book bags.

Fun for all and a real treat!

What have Year 1 been up to?

  posted on May 19, 2009 14:59 as Year 1

Year 1 have been very busy recently; here are some Spring highlights:

Gymnastics
We have been working hard to develop our gymnastics skills. We have been climbing, jumping, flipping, travelling and balancing. Best of all though, we liked swinging on the ropes.

Fruit tasting and shopping
As part of our Design and Technology work, we went shopping to buy different fruits to make fruit salad. We walked to Rubery and looked in the shops at the different fruits we could buy. We bought lots of different fruit, including Chinese pears and dragon fruit. We put them together to make fruit salad. We decided if the fruit was juicy, sour, sweet, soft or crunchy. We all tried the dragon fruit but we didn't really like it!

Traffic Survey
In our Geography work we have been investigating the local roads. We have looked at the street furniture to see what the signs tell us. We looked at the different vehicles. We went up to the bypass to see the cars whizzing past. We then carried out a Traffic Survey. We couldn't believe how many cars we saw! We ran out of room to put them on our survey.
